Meet Mai, our Product Manager
Our Product team is responsible for building the Tide app – working hand in hand with our ever growing Tech team, they’re ensuring we’re bringing our members the best possible app. We’d love for you to meet the people that make the Product team – here’s Mai.
👋 Hi Mai! Introduce yourself in a sentence.
Hi, I’m Mai – pronounced like “my” rather than “may”! I’m a Product Manager here at Tide.
What’s your background?
Prior to joining Tide, I was a strategy consultant working in different sectors. It was actually quite similar to working at Tide in many ways – fast-paced, challenging and I got to work with smart and friendly colleagues.
Before that, I had a short stint in corporate banking which I found pretty stifling, so I don’t talk about it too much if I can help it.
How did you cross paths with Tide? / What made you want to join Tide?
When I first heard about Tide’s company mission, it really just clicked. I have first-hand experience of how archaic, expensive and cumbersome services can be in traditional banking, and I liked the idea of being part of changing that.
What’s your typical working day?
As everyone in Tide will tell you, everyday is different and so much happens in a single day! Generally, my day-to-day tasks really vary depending on what feature I am working on, but it’s some combination of:
– Conducting user research
– Writing user stories
– Talking with designers and developers about how to implement new features
– Running stand-ups, backlog refinements, sprint plannings, and retros
– Tracking delivery progress and thinking about how to make things more efficient
– Helping put together presentations for company and board meetings
– Meeting with potential partners
We’ve also recently started using Lookr, a data analytics tool, and so I spend quite a lot of time looking at data to get insights that help with product decisions.
What’s your favourite Tide feature?
I’m partial to the most recent product we’ve released, which is Scheduled Payments. It was also the first internally-developed product I owned from end-to-end, so the release was quite momentous for me!
We had a great team working on it which was really exciting. We focused a lot on usability and conducted lots of tests with Tide members, and we’ve released something that we can really be proud of.
What’s the most interesting challenge you’ve come across since you joined Tide?
Since launching scheduled payments, I’m working on a project to explore new ways to offer new services for our members, which has been really interesting. The decisions we had to make are multi-faceted and complex but it also gave us a chance to be really data-driven in making our decisions which was super exciting. You’ll be hearing about the results from me soon!
What’s your hidden talent?
I can ride a unicycle.
When you’re not at Tide, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I really enjoy getting out of the city – I recently went to Scotland for mountain biking which I really enjoyed, so hopefully I’ll be doing more of that again!
