Meet Tom, our Lead Android Engineer
The Tech team builds and maintains the Tide app that our members use every day. We’d love for you to meet the people behind the software engineering team – here’s Tom our Lead Android Engineer.
👋 Hey Tom! Introduce yourself in a sentence.
Hello, I’m Tom and I help our Android team deliver awesome new features and updates for the Tide Android app.
What made you want to join Tide?
I was looking for a new challenge in an app-focused company, with a startup culture and an interesting problem to solve. Tide ticked all of those boxes and more.
What’s your typical working day?
Helping solve any issues which are slowing down the team’s progress, facilitating our release process to get new features delivered to our members smoothly, planning for upcoming projects and hopefully still finding time to code.
What’s your favourite Tide feature?
I have a lot of love for our international currency feature, which is in the final stages of testing and will soon be made available to all our members who have a limited business account. Having worked closely on the project and seeing the huge amount of value in it for our members, it’s something I’m really excited to see people use and enjoy.
What’s the most interesting tech challenge you’ve came across since you joined Tide?
Enabling our team to grow without stepping on each other’s toes. Our plans at Tide are super ambitious and we’re currently expanding to allow us to create more great features, faster. It is a great tech challenge to facilitate multiple teams working efficiently and releasing updates to our members as smoothly and as often as possible.
Favourite desk snack?
Anything and everything – I love a snack! The company breakfasts always go down a treat too.
What’s your hidden talent?
I spent 7 years as a visual effects / motion graphics designer before becoming an app developer. Well it’s that, or my impression of Donald Duck washing his face, it’s a tough call.
When you’re not at Tide, what’s your favourite thing to do?
Tinkering with electronics, home automation, triathlon training and doing silly dances to make my son laugh.
