Meet Warren, from our Payments team
Our Product team is responsible for building the Tide app – working hand in hand with our ever growing Tech team, they’re ensuring we’re bringing our members the best possible app. We’d love for you to meet the people that make the Product team – here’s Warren.
👋 Hey Warren! Can you introduce yourself in a sentence?
I’m Warren, originally from South Africa but I have lived in London for many years. I’ve spent most of that time working across technology and financial services, but I have also dabbled in medical applications, R&D and data science.
Why did you decide to join Tide?
I’ve been here since the early days of Tide, (I was the first employee to be exact) 😁 Our founder, George Bevis impressed me from the start with his very clear ambition and drive to make banking better for businesses and it’s fantastic to see how Tide has remained true to that vision throughout.
What’s your typical working day?
I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical day! Every day is different and presents its own set of interesting challenges. But that’s a lot of what I like about working at Tide. Payments is in many ways the backbone of the Tide service, but if we are doing a good job a lot of what we do should be almost completely invisible to Tide members – it should “just work”. We spend every day finding ways to get closer to that goal.
What’s your favourite Tide feature?
A feature that not enough people know about is the ability to make a payment by letting the Tide app automatically read the payment details from an invoice you have received. This is incredibly convenient and definitely saves time and hassle. I’m probably a little biased because I had a big hand in implementing that feature 😬
What’s the most interesting challenge you’ve come across since you joined Tide?
It has always been our intention to ensure that Tide is incredibly secure for our members, while at the same time making it quick and easy to sign up and seamless and convenient to use. We constantly challenge ourselves to find innovative ways to ensure that those two objectives are not at odds with each other.
You were Tide’s first employee, what’s your best memory so far?
It’s difficult to choose just one. There are so many good memories including signing up our very first members, summer barbecues on the roof of the office, our pop-up store in Old Street or really “that memorable thing that happened yesterday” (which is true of any day).
Favourite desk snack?
I enjoy sparkling water and a good cup of coffee. Tide’s new coffee machine is definitely getting some use ☕
What’s your hidden talent?
I can write a pretty mean regular expression and I know more digits of π than is at all useful to any human.
When you’re not at Tide, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I love spending time with my 3 young sons – hiking, skiing or anything outdoors – put me on a mountain or in a forest and I am very happy indeed.
