What is SEPA direct debit?

A SEPA Direct Debit is a simple, secure, and automated way to send or receive euro payments within SEPA countries. Instead of making a manual transfer, the payer authorises a third party to withdraw a set amount directly from their account via a signed SEPA mandate. This method is commonly used for recurring payments such as mobile subscriptions, monthly bills, or online services. There are two types of SEPA Direct Debits:

Incoming SEPA Direct Debit

You send a SEPA mandate to your customer, authorising automatic payments from their account. Once the mandate is signed and confirmed, payments are collected automatically at the agreed frequency.

Outgoing SEPA Direct Debit

You sign a SEPA mandate with a service provider or supplier, who collects the agreed amounts directly from your Tide business account.

SEPA includes a total of 36 countries, covering all EU member states as well as several non-EU countries.

Easily collect payments from your customers using SEPA Direct Debits.

Here’s how to do it in the Tide app:

Open the Tide app and tap “Get Paid”

Select “Collect Direct Debit”

Tap “New Mandate”, then enter your customer’s details: name, email and IBAN

Complete your direct debit setup: set the mandate details, collection frequency, and payment date(s).

Once the mandate is signed and the IBAN verified via a test transfer, your customer authorises the collection. You’ll receive a notification once the mandate is confirmed, and the funds will be automatically paid into your Tide business account.
