Meet Andrew, from our Design team

From app screens to marketing campaigns, our trusty Design team is responsible for building Tide’s visuals. We’d love for you to meet the people behind the Design team – so first up, here’s Andrew.

👋 Hey Andrew! Please introduce yourself in a sentence.
Hey, I’m Andrew. I’m originally from a small town in Scotland called Melrose. There are more sheep than people there. But normally I just say “near Edinburgh” when asked, else I get a blank look.

What’s your background?
I studied Illustration and Visual Communication at Edinburgh College of Art. I then worked on freelance projects for a number of years, before deciding to do a Masters in Design at Goldsmiths University in London.

How did you cross paths with Tide? / What made you want to join Tide?
I came across a Designer role at Tide shortly after graduating from Goldsmiths, and it sounded like the perfect project to get hands-on experience and learn rapidly – and I wasn’t disappointed.

What’s your typical working day?
I work with pretty much every team at Tide on a large number of different projects – so my days can be pretty full-on, but varied, which is what I enjoy the most. A typical day could involve working on a new feature for the app to a social media post. My plans for the day often change depending on what comes at me!

What’s your favourite Tide feature?
You should never love one of your children more than another! I think we offer a great service for business owners to make their lives easier, and hopefully our UX/UI helps to make using Tide an enjoyable experience. We have many new exciting products and services in the pipeline too, and we’re always looking for feedback on how to improve the design – so if you have any suggestions or thoughts, send them to us at design@tide.co.

What’s your favourite UX/UI part of the app?
I really like the new timeline design, as I think it’s clean and will improve our members’ experience when checking their accounts on a day-to-day basis.

I also have a soft spot for Tide on the Web, as it’s a great feature that not many of our members know about. It basically allows members to view their accounts on the web, as well as on mobile, which is a great help when doing something a little more complicated.

What’s the most interesting design challenge you’ve come across since you joined Tide?
I pretty much come across an unexpected challenge every single day, which requires lots of thinking. It’s great because it means I never stop learning. We’re currently working on several new features that will hopefully help shape the next phase of Tide’s evolution – it’s a real challenge but will be worth it.

You were one of Tide’s first employee, what’s your best memory?
Tide had 6 employees when I started, so I’ve seen it grow rapidly which has been amazing for me personally. I have loads of great memories from the app being first launched in January 2017, to the rebrand earlier this year. Also the fun and smart people I work with really help to make Tide a great place to work.

Favourite desk snack?
Fruit. In the early days, it was my job to collect money from the team for the office fruit… Now we get it for free. Dream come true.

What’s your hidden talent?
I can fit my fist in my mouth when I’ve had a few pints. I also draw a fair bit in my spare time.

When you’re not at Tide, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I cycle a lot, especially now that my body has stopped me from running and playing football as much as I’d like (getting old is great). I also watch my football team Hearts play when I can, which is often more painful than fun. Therefore I also drink a fair bit…
