Make a payment

You can send a CHAPS payment the same way you’d make any transfer from your Tide account:

  1. Go to the Accounts tab

  2. Tap Send > Make a payment

If you're sending up to £250,000, both CHAPS and Faster Payments (FPS) will appear as options. If you're sending more than £250,000, CHAPS is the only available option.

CHAPS payment limit

With Tide, you can send CHAPS payments of up to £1 million (subject to your your individual transfer limits).

CHAPS processing timeline

All CHAPS payments are processed via the Bank of England.

If the payment is sent Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm (excluding bank holidays), you get same-day guaranteed settlement.

Payments made outside these hours settle the next working day. Some payments might take longer if they require additional checks.

Should I use CHAPS or Faster Payments?

Use Faster Payments (FPS) for low or regular-value payments that you want to arrive instantly. They're either free or cost 20p depending on your plan.

Use CHAPS if you're sending a UK, high-value payment and need it settled on the same working day.

CHAPS payment returned to the sender?

CHAPS payment returned to the sender?

CHAPS payments must include your exact account details, exactly as shown in your Tide app:

  • For domestic CHAPS payments, it's your full name, sort code and account number

  • For International SWIFT payments (settled by CHAPS in the UK), that’s your full name and IBAN

Payments with missing or incorrect details will be rejected and returned by our banking partner. We can’t amend these payments. If yours was returned, please ask the sender to re-send it with the correct details.
